IHG Hotels works with Ampion to provide hotels with local community solar

IHG Hotels & Resorts (IHG) has announced a new renewable energy offering for IHG hotels in select markets across the United States in partnership with community solar solutions provider Ampion. IHG is the first hotel company to provide hotels with a community solar offering that includes Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), helping hotels reduce greenhouse gas emissions by harnessing renewable energy through solar panel projects built near the hotel community.
The electricity produced by the solar panel projects feeds into the local power grid, and hotels can subscribe to a portion of the projects and receive both Green-e certified RECs and a rebate for the clean energy produced on their regular electricity bill. Hotels registered through this model can confidently claim to be powered by renewable energy while supporting the development of new local solar projects that create jobs and improve air quality in their communities.
This offer is available in countries where legislation supports community solar depending on available capacity. IHG’s community solar offering is currently active for hotels in Illinois, Maine and Maryland, with more states to follow soon. Hotels that have signed up or are in the process of signing up represent nearly 30% of IHG’s hotel energy output in those three states.
“We are pleased to offer IHG-branded hotel owners an innovative solution to help them reduce carbon emissions at the property level,” said Kathryn Dalton, IHG Hotels & Resorts SVP of Corporate Responsibility and Chief Sustainability Officer. “IHG’s community solar offering in partnership with Ampion is a win-win for hoteliers due to its cost savings, zero capital costs and environmental benefits. This offering is just one of the many ways we are making progress towards IHG’s sustainability commitments, which include reducing energy use and carbon emissions in line with climate science.”
